Often students aren't paid for work experience, so they tend to find their own, close to where they live.
The Brolga Project turns that upside down. It finds the work experience and takes students away from their residence and home city, hoping they will build a career in the placement businesses' towns or cities.
ONE THING IS FOR SURE
if there's any cost to students, this project won't work!
BUSINESSES
you're wanting staff to create better business efficiency leading to higher profits...
AND STUDENTS
need to earn income too, so by joining forces both parties
HAVE ENORMOUS OPPORTUNITY TO PROFIT
from this project.
THEREFORE it's in all party's interests to balance start-up and placement costs. Initially, administration costs will be met in-house by Brolga Project Management, (although sponsorship will be welcomed) with businesses asked to pick up the costs for travel and accommodation if the student can't be billeted. In time, a mix of sponsorship, business arrangements and brokerage will ensure the longevity of the project. To reiterate ~ there must be no costs to students.
Some points to note here:
1) There are two interpretations of 'work experience' - the first is 1 to 4 weeks of (usually) unpaid work, the second is 1 - 4 months of (usually) paid work.
2) Students generally have little money and need more, being paid for work experience is a genuine attraction for them, along with the possibility of vacation work and the security of employment after uni if the initial work experience goes well.
3) Students on short term placements will need to maintain their housing (rental) arrangements in their home city while they are working away from home. It is unlikely many would be able to pay accommodation at their work-place as well as home, so businesses need to consider appropriate and fair measures of compensation, bearing in mind the longer term benefit if the student returns to the workplace after completing their studies.
