Campaign 100
~ Building Regional Capital ~
....
|
What? A grassroots, collective, sociable effort to find work placements for at least 100 university students - enthusiastic, professional young candidates looking to fill the void that is the regional skills shortage. |
Why? To illustrate to students the excellent career choices available in rural and regional centres, giving them a chance to try regional life and work so they'll look to the regions when they graduate, injecting human and financial capital into needy communities. |
|
Who? Everyone who wants to build lifestyle, career opportunities and profitability for themselves, their business or their regional community. |
Where? Any rural and regional host agency (businesses, NGOs or government departments), or those businesses in metropolitan areas that service regional/rural communities. (Postcode definitions) |
|
How? Costs & Funding: There's a $200 (+ GST) administration fee for taking a student; There is no joining or admin fee for students, but some will have to meet ongoing expenses (e.g. rent) while on placement, and host agencies are encouraged to consider this as we communicate about the costs. However, even at the most extreme level of cost, it's still a very cheap and effective way to get young professionals into your community.
Communication: Using word of mouth, traditional media outlets and the internet to create dialogue between the Brolga Project, Students and Host Agencies, centred on a promotional PowerPoint (available @ link below) |
When? Now!! With students being placed in the lead up to, or for the June/July 2010 semester break. Some students are ready for work experience as a part of their studies immediately, others may have graduated and are looking for casual work or work experience to see what life in a regional community is like. Each placement is unique and developed between the parties on a teleconference. ('How the Process Works')

Scope of Students: With over 600 students on the Brolga Project's books, almost every study field and background is represented.
1) Some are mature age students who have many years of experience in their respective fields behind them, either in Australia or overseas. Some are married and keen to move their entire families into a regional area, looking for the sense of community that is often lacking in urban centres - but they want to try out the lifestyle first and see the Brolga Project as a means of validating their thoughts.
2) Some students have gone straight from school to university, many express willingness to share their hobbies and skills outside their immediate curriculum, e.g. teaching language lessons (particularly international students), sharing or helping with cooking classes, music, dancing, social events or sports training.
3) Some students have developed projects while on placement, which if successful, will bring grant monies into the local community, other students have recognised that there's such a void in the community for their skills, that there's opportunity for them to set up businesses servicing the local community.
